Summary

The principles of regulation are similar and are relevant for all energy companies (electricity, gas, oil products retail, LPG and other petroleum products) and for all utility companies (energy, water, transport (road and air)¸ also hospitals and all other organisations dedicated to public service.  This course gives a general introduction to economic regulation setting out the principles that apply across all sectors.

This is a five-day certificated course introducing energy and utility regulation. This course is suitable for anyone wishing to learn about economic regulation in the energy and/or utility sectors.

Course objectives

After completing this course, delegates will have an understanding of economic energy and utility regulation and basics of how to regulate the commercial activities of energy and/or enterprises.

Government and parastatal officials involved in the regulation of energy or utility enterprises, company executives involved in regulated activities, and operational managers, all of whom deal with regulation or its effects in their daily operational roles.

Main Concepts; Third party and open access; Network codes, International and multi sector examples

  1. Pricing and Tariffs

Components of the price; Types of price regulation; Tariff design principles; Pricing strategies; Cost of service tariff design; Comparison of international prices and regulations
